What to Say When You Call:

“Hi, my name is [YOUR NAME], I am one of your constituents living in [YOUR CITY, STATE]. I want to ask [SENATOR/REPRESENTATIVE NAME] to support critical climate solutions in the following 4 key ways:

  1. A Clean Electricity Payment Program that cuts emissions and modernizes our grid.

  2. Directing 40% of funding to frontline communities.

  3. Ending subsidies for fossil fuel corporations.

  4. A Civilian Climate Corps that puts people to work.

The bottom line is we must act now to meet the climate crisis head on. Thank you.”

We have less than a decade to keep warming below 1.5°C, a critical threshold for humankind.

Here’s what Congress can do:

  1. Create a Clean Electricity Payment Program that gets us on the path to a carbon-free power sector by 2035 by building wind and solar at a record pace. This will cut emissions and modernize our grid.

  2. Direct 40% of the benefits from relevant federal investments to frontline communities to realize environmental justice. Investments include programs for renewable energy, energy efficiency, flood mitigation and more.

  3. End fossil fuel subsidies, which the federal government spends $15 billion on directly every year—and hundreds of billions on indirectly.

  4. Start a Civilian Climate Corps that trains and employs Americans, creating a pathway into good paying jobs and the clean energy workforce we need.

FAQs

Does calling my members of Congress matter?

Yes. Your representatives use the number of calls they receive for or against a particular topic to decide what to focus on and what to fight for.

Should I call even if my members of Congress are Democrats?

Yes. Democrats need to show their commitment to passing the climate solutions we need. Calling them will encourage them to push harder.

Should I call even if my members of Congress are Republicans?

Yes. Polling shows the majority of Republicans think the government should be doing more on climate change (source: Pew Research). Your call ensures your voice is heard and encourages your representative to support the critical climate solutions we need.

Why are these the 4 asks?

These 4 asks are researched and developed by Call4Climate and are among the most important solutions for rapidly reducing US greenhouse gas emissions and ensuring a just transition that puts people to work. They are also among the top issues for grassroots climate justice organizations across America.

Why is this important now?

We have less than a decade left to keep warming below 1.5°C, a critical threshold for humankind (source: UN IPCC) and the US is the 2nd largest contributor of greenhouse gas emissions globally (source: US EPA). This Congressional session is our best opportunity to pass legislation that will put us on the path to a warming-free future, while putting Americans to work in the clean industries we need.

I called after hours and couldn’t leave a message:

I’ve called already, now what?
